For Sonali Gopalkar, the path into project management wasn’t a sudden pivot. It was a natural evolution shaped by experience, curiosity and a drive to lead with intention.

“I completed my M.B.A. in operations from NMIMS University in India, which gave me a strong foundation in process improvement and business strategy,” she explains. “While I was completing my degree, I was a data specialist at HERE Technologies, where I worked on project tools and actively supported Scrum-related activities, which sparked my interest in Agile methodologies.

That early exposure to Agile planted a seed. Over time, that interest deepened into a clear professional direction.

“While working in a Scrum-driven environment, I became deeply interested in structured project execution and team collaboration,” she says. “Project management naturally aligned with my operations background and my hands-on experience with Agile practices.”

Choosing Us to Build a Strong Foundation

With a growing interest in project management, Sonali knew she needed a certificate that would help formalize her skills and prepare for the next step.

“I chose the UC Berkeley Extension certificate to strengthen my project management fundamentals and prepare for the PMP® exam,” she shares. “I was looking to build structured knowledge, leadership skills and practical project management expertise.”

Her decision was also shaped by Berkeley’s reputation. “I researched reputable universities offering project management programs and found UC Berkeley Extension highly recommended for its comprehensive curriculum and industry recognition.”

Through the certificate’s curriculum, students—such as Sonali—gain hands-on experience in key areas of stakeholder communication, risk management, scheduling and Agile frameworks. These are all skills that align directly with industry needs and work toward certifications such as the PMP®.

For Sonali, that alignment was critical.

From the start, Sonali found the certificate to be both real world and collaborative, two elements that made a lasting impact on her learning experience.

“The curriculum was well-structured and practical,” she says. “I appreciated the case studies and collaborative assignments.”

But it wasn’t just the coursework; it was the people.

“Interacting with fellow students from diverse professional backgrounds broadened my perspective,” she adds. “Instructors were knowledgeable and supportive.”

That diversity of thought and experience mirrors what students encounter in working project environments where cross-functional collaboration is essential.

Lessons like stakeholder management, risk planning and structured documentation will be necessary in future roles.

Flexibility Without Compromise

Like many of our students, Sonali balanced her studies with other priorities, making flexibility a key factor in her success.

“The online learning experience was flexible and engaging, with interactive discussions, activities and structured modules that made learning effective.”

This allowed her to stay engaged without sacrificing quality, an increasingly important factor for working professionals and career changers alike.

After completing our certificate, Sonali worked as a developer at Silicon Valley Project Management, but is now facing a unique professional situation.

“I am currently not working due to employment authorization requirements,” she shares. “I have been proactively focusing on enhancing my skills and expanding my knowledge in project management and related areas.”

Rather than seeing this as a setback, Sonali reframes it as an opportunity.

“I am using this period productively to strengthen my professional foundation so that I am well-prepared for future opportunities once I am authorized to work. Lessons like stakeholder management, risk planning and structured documentation were applied at Silicon Valley Project Management and will be necessary in future roles.

“I’m also actively exploring how AI can support project management processes and plan to integrate it into my workflows in future roles,” Sonali adds, keeping a bright eye toward her future.

Professionally, the certificate strengthens my foundation in project management and brings me closer to achieving PMP® certification and advancing into leadership roles.

Growth, Confidence and Career Direction

For future students, Sonali is quick to emphasize that success in the certificate comes down to engagement and application.

“Stay consistent, actively participate in discussions, apply concepts to real-life scenarios, and build strong connections with peers and instructors,” she advises. “Practical application is key.”

For Sonali, earning the certificate represents a significant milestone.

“Personally, it represents growth and confidence in my capabilities,” she says. “Professionally, it strengthens my foundation in project management and brings me closer to achieving PMP® certification and advancing into leadership roles.

With a clear vision for the future, Sonali is focused on where her project management journey can take her next.

“I see myself as a certified PMP®, leading large-scale projects or Agile transformations, contributing strategically to organizational growth and mentoring aspiring project managers.”

It’s a goal grounded not just in ambition, but in preparation.
