From Clinical Science to Business Analysis
When you think about business analysis, you might imagine someone crunching numbers in spreadsheets or writing endless technical reports. But according to Ana Gutierrez, business analysis is really about being the bridge between people and technology.
“I enjoy working on new systems implementation because it gives me the opportunity to navigate between two different worlds: end-users and technical teams,” Ana says. “What I enjoy the most is being able to tell the story of what each team needs.”
That storytelling mindset—and the ability to translate between groups—is exactly what makes a business analyst valuable in today’s workplace. And it’s why Ana decided to formalize her skills through our Certificate Program in Business Analysis.
Building a Career Without Formal Training
Ana didn’t begin her career in tech or business. She earned a bachelor’s degree in clinical science from San Francisco State University. But like many professionals, she found herself drawn into business operations roles.
Over the years, Ana has worked as a business analyst, business operations specialist, business systems specialist and SAP business applications manager. Throughout her 25-year and counting career, she has built up deep expertise through on-the-job learning.
Still, Ana felt something was missing.
“I had worked as a business analyst for many years without formal training,” Ana explains. “Most of my knowledge was passed on to me by technical managers. I was looking for a formal education to learn the skills and responsibilities of a business analyst.”
For Ana, our Certificate Program in Business Analysis felt like the natural choice. She had already completed our leadership and management certificate back in 2017, and she trusted the program design and instructors.
“I like the programs that UC Berkeley Extension offers!” Ana enthuses. “I can pick and choose specific courses that help me do my job better.”
Why Business Analysis Matters
So why pursue the Certificate Program in Business Analysis? For Ana, the decision was partly professional—and partly personal.
“The completion of the certificate was part of my development plan and aligned with my job duties,” Ana explains. “It was a requirement for the company to take care of the course fees.”
Beyond job requirements, Ana recognized how business analysis is central to making organizations work better. Business analysts don’t just gather project requirements; they help teams communicate, manage stakeholder expectations and guide projects from concept to completion.
Our certificate is built exactly for that. The curriculum covers the tools and techniques to elicit, analyze, communicate and validate requirements, along with project management and stakeholder engagement skills. Students leave not only with technical knowledge, but also with practical ways to organize complex work into clear, actionable steps.
A Modern Learning Experience
Ana’s experience in the classroom was transformative.
“At the beginning, I attended in-person classes and eventually my classes moved online,” she says. “In the online format, part of the assignments required us to collaborate with our classmates: read their assessment on specific topics and comment or ask questions. This helped the class engage with each other and share diverse perspectives on various topics.”
She also appreciated how responsive the instructors were. “They gave great feedback on the results of our assignments, in addition to being available for any questions or topic clarifications.”
For Ana, the combination of accessible curriculum, group conversations and expert teaching made all the difference.
“I appreciated the ease of navigating the curriculum online, participating in group conversations, and that the reading material and topic organization were excellent,” she adds.
Unlike some forms of education that feel abstract, Ana was able to apply lessons from her courses directly to her job.
“Once I learned the business analysis methodology, I immediately applied it to my work as a business systems specialist at PG&E,” she says. “It made a big difference in understanding the IT methodology for implementing new applications and functionality.”
Not only did this boost her own effectiveness, but she was also able to share the knowledge with coworkers, multiplying the impact of what she learned. “The certificate provided me with the tools to organize my work effectively,” she explains.
Confidence and Validation
For Ana, completing the certificate wasn’t just about job skills—it was about identity.
“From a personal perspective, earning the certificate validated what I do at work,” she says. “It gave me a great sense of accomplishment to have gone through the certificate, and I learned so much about the skills and the profession of a business analyst.”
Professionally, the certificate provided “the confidence to excel at my job, knowing that I have the skills and tools to perform my duties well.”
So what advice does Ana have for someone thinking about pursuing business analysis?
“If you like helping others accomplish results and enjoy working and collaborating among groups with diverse ways of thinking, then you should pursue the Certificate Program in Business Analysis,” she says. “You will gain the tools to organize complex project work into manageable pieces of work and manage stakeholder expectations from different areas of the organization.”
She also emphasizes the importance of engagement. “Stay engaged in the group discussions and participate by asking questions to both your instructor and your classmates—you will be surprised at how much you can learn from their experiences and challenges at work and how they resolved them.”
And perhaps most importantly: “Try to apply the concepts you learn in class in your everyday work—this will make you more excited about what you are learning and will make the course reading assignments and group discussions more interesting.”
Ana’s story shows how powerful structured learning can be, even for someone with decades of experience. Whether you’re just starting out or already working in a technical or business role, our certificate in business analysis can give you the tools, validation and confidence to move forward.
And like Ana, you might just discover that you have what it takes to be the bridge between people and technology—one project at a time.
