A Journey of Resilience, Growth and Purpose

My early exposure to business began through my family’s ventures in the pharmaceutical and hardware industries, where I gained hands-on experience in daily operations such as cash management, inventory control, system updates, invoicing, pricing, stock ordering and back-office coordination. Working closely with my father during this time shaped my understanding of business fundamentals and sparked my long-standing admiration for marketing.

I have always been drawn to identifying untapped markets and opportunities for growth. Over time, I came to understand that for a product or idea to successfully move from manufacturing to market, it requires more than innovation—it demands strategic marketing, informed execution and the ability to sustain momentum.

This realization deepened my passion for marketing and strategic development.

So it’s only natural that I began to pursue online studies. UC Berkeley had been on my radar for years, and discovering Extension’s programs reaffirmed my confidence in both my academic path and career direction. I was seeking practical, real-world learning that would allow me to build meaningfully on my foundation.

My academic experience in the digital marketing certificate was smooth and well structured. The semester-based format allowed for a gradual transition, and the online Canvas platform made communication with instructors and classmates seamless. Assignments, deadlines and grades were easy to track, and the instructors were consistently responsive and supportive.

All of my courses were completed online, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Learning alongside students from around the world was both engaging and enriching. The flexible learning model made it possible for me to remain fully committed and complete my studies. I initially enrolled in individual courses but chose to fully commit within the first month, completing both my Certification Program in Marketing and the Professional Sequence in Digital Marketing.

The skills and frameworks I gained at Berkeley are now actively applied in my professional work across various industries. They continue to support my growth and allow me to deliver strategic, results-driven solutions for clients.

It’s been an evolution from relying on gut instinct to highly analytical leadership. I started obsessed with user intent and social data to anticipating market shifts, which is how we caught an untapped C2C (consumer-to-consumer) market while everyone else is still figuring themselves out in B2B.

Right now, I’m consolidating my work into a parent company that connects the dots between food, logistics, real estate and HR. I call it a strategic ecosystem: for example, our logistics wing makes our food delivery faster and our HR branch handles the scaling. I’m attracting clients who want that kind of cross-industry synergy rather than just a one-off service.

UC Berkeley Extension provided the blueprint for my consultancy, specifically through the rigorous research methodologies I mastered in the programs. I frequently apply the same data-classification frameworks from my final project to transform raw market noise into high-level strategies for my clients in food and logistics.

This academic discipline is what allowed me to forecast the post-COVID shift toward a self-sufficient C2C economy before it hit the mainstream—giving my clients a decisive first-mover advantage by turning abstract trends into actionable business models.

This journey was also marked by profound personal challenges. During my studies, I was pregnant and experienced the loss of my father. Balancing grief, academic responsibilities and major life changes was deeply challenging. The empathy and flexibility shown by my instructors made it possible for me to complete my courses successfully. Completing the programs with distinction exceeded my expectations and strengthened my confidence and resilience.

To new students, my advice is to stay committed to your journey and never hesitate to seek guidance from your instructors. Each path is unique—learn from others, find balance and trust that the effort you invest will shape your future.

Looking ahead, I plan to continue building my career through freelance work while expanding my portfolio through strategic marketing initiatives. I am also passionate about contributing to the growth of marketing practices in my home country of Mauritius, helping businesses unlock untapped market potential and strengthen the success of their products and services.
