For much of his career, Sean Vaziri focused on building complex systems that power modern organizations. As a senior workload automation engineer at Apple Inc., his work sits at the intersection of infrastructure, automation and enterprise-scale technology.

But over time, Sean realized that technical expertise alone wasn’t enough to create meaningful impact.

Through our leadership and management certificate, Sean set out to develop the strategic capabilities needed to connect technology with business priorities and ultimately help teams perform at their best.

His journey reflects a growing reality in the modern workplace: Technical excellence can open doors, but leadership skills are what allow professionals to shape outcomes.

A Career Built on Engineering Excellence

Sean’s professional journey began in highly technical roles focused on engineering and systems development. During the course of his career, he worked with enterprise automation platforms and distributed systems, helping organizations streamline and manage complex workflows.

“At Apple,” Sean says, “I help design and implement solutions that automate critical business processes across distributed systems.”

Early in his career, Sean’s focus was primarily on execution: building reliable systems, integrating technologies and delivering solutions that worked.

But as his responsibilities expanded, Sean began collaborating more closely with product teams, business stakeholders and leadership groups across the business.

That experience changed his perspective.

“I realized that technical skills alone aren’t enough,” he says. “Real impact comes from connecting technology to business strategy, organizational priorities and long-term goals.”

Recognizing that gap led Sean to start thinking about leadership development in a more intentional way.

I realized that technical skills alone aren’t enough. Real impact comes from connecting technology to business strategy, organizational priorities and long-term goals.

Why Leadership Skills Matter in Technical Roles

Sean had always been interested in leadership, but working across multiple organizations gave him a firsthand look at how leadership can shape team performance.

“I’ve seen the profound impact both strong and weak leadership can have on teams and outcomes,” he says. “Good leaders create clarity, motivate teams and align people around a shared vision.”

He also saw the opposite.

“Poor leadership, on the other hand, can slow progress and demotivate talented teams,” he adds.

Those experiences reinforced an important realization: Leadership isn’t simply about authority or job titles. “It’s about influence, vision and aligning people around goals,” Sean explains.

To build those skills, he decided to pursue formal training.

Sean was already familiar with us as he had previously completed our project management certificate, which left a strong impression.

“That certificate was practical, rigorous and taught by instructors with real-world experience,” he says. “So when I discovered the leadership and management certificate, the program immediately resonated with me.

“It addressed the areas I wanted to grow in: leadership, communication, negotiation, mediation, and turning business goals into actionable plans and roadmaps,” Sean adds.

Equally important was the flexibility the program offered. Sean was working full time at Apple while pursuing the certificate, so he needed coursework that could fit into a busy schedule while still delivering real-world value.

“I wanted something I could do while working, with frameworks I could apply immediately to real challenges,” he says. “The certificate offered exactly that.

“I took several courses online while working full time,” Sean adds. “The experience was engaging. Live sessions allowed real-time interaction with instructors and peers, and recordings let me revisit concepts when applying them at work.”

And choosing Berkeley felt like a natural decision.

“Honestly, if you’re looking for any professional certificate, what institution is better than UC Berkeley?” he says. “Its reputation is strong worldwide, and the quality of instruction and curriculum is exceptional.”

Learning Through Real-World Application

One of the aspects Sean appreciated most about the certificate was its emphasis on practical learning.

“What I loved most were the workshops and hands-on exercises, where we could practice leadership scenarios and apply frameworks in real situations,” Sean recalls.

His instructors played a key role in making those lessons meaningful. “The instructors were fantastic. They’re real-world leaders who shared experiences from their careers rather than just theory,” Sean divulges. “That made the learning relatable and immediately actionable.”

Equally valuable were the perspectives shared by his fellow students.

“My fellow students were another highlight,” he says. “Everyone came from different industries, so the discussions were rich and diverse. Hearing how others solved leadership challenges broadened my perspective and helped me see new approaches.”

For Sean, those conversations reinforced an important truth about leadership: There’s rarely just one way to solve a problem.

Turning Strategy Into Action

The leadership concepts Sean learned through the certificate quickly translated into his day-to-day work.

The flexibility of online learning helped him maintain momentum without stepping away from his professional responsibilities. Even better, the timing allowed him to apply what he learned immediately.

“Learning while working full time accelerated everything,” Sean says. “I could study frameworks Tuesday night and test them Wednesday morning.”

That loop made the lessons stick. “The real-world feedback loop compressed years of learning into months and made the lessons ingrained in a way that theory alone never could.

“The certificate helped me connect technical work to business strategy, translate goals into actionable roadmaps and communicate more effectively with stakeholders,” Sean adds.

He also discovered that leadership skills are valuable even without a formal management title.

“It also taught me that you don’t need to be in a management role to develop leadership and management skills,” Sean says. “These capabilities help in any position, and in my opinion are a must for everyone.”

The certificate helped him approach challenges with a broader perspective, one that considers organizational priorities and technical solutions. Earlier in his career, he says, success was defined mostly by solving technical problems.

Today, it means something different.

“It’s about aligning efforts, helping teams understand purpose and creating environments where people can perform at their best.”

A Transformational Shift in Perspective

For Sean, earning the certificate was more than a professional milestone—it was a shift in mindset.

“Personally, the certificate changed my perspective,” he says. “It taught me to see the big picture, understand organizational goals and focus on underlying motivations rather than just tasks.”

Professionally, it reinforced his commitment to developing leadership skills alongside technical expertise.

“I now have frameworks to guide teams, communicate strategy and turn business goals into actionable results,” he says.

And perhaps most importantly, the experience reshaped how he thinks about leadership itself.

“What stood out most was realizing that leadership is learnable, not innate,” Sean says.

For years, he believed that strong technical skills would naturally translate into leadership ability. “I spent years assuming that technical excellence would automatically translate into leadership excellence—it didn’t,” he says.

That realization ultimately opened the door to deeper growth.

Sean encourages anyone considering leadership courses to approach the experience with curiosity and openness.

“Bring real-world challenges to class and apply the frameworks immediately,” he advises. “Engage with your fellow classmates. They come from different industries and their experiences bring fresh perspectives.”

He also recommends embracing the learning process, even when it feels uncomfortable.

"Be open to discomfort, question your assumptions and embrace being a beginner,” he says. “Leadership development is not linear, but the investment pays off.”

As Sean looks toward the future, his goal is clear: to continue bridging the worlds of technology, strategy and people.

“My focus will be on aligning technical work with business objectives, helping teams understand the bigger picture and translating strategy into tangible results,” Sean envisions. “I want to be a leader who people follow because they believe in the vision and trust the execution—not just because of a title.”
