A Bright Future in Sustainability
Hello! I’m Giovane Mendonca, and I’m currently studying economics at IBMEC (Brazilian Institute of Capital Markets) and am proud to say that I am a Fall 2024 graduate of the Berkeley Global Access (BGA) Program!
I chose BGA because it’s comprehensive and offers countless opportunities to connect with people from all around the world. I was also attracted to the option of choosing courses from various fields of study, ranging from astrophysics to music, which really helps you align your major with your personal interests.
I enrolled in Energy and Civilization UGBA 193B, Energy Engineering Seminar ENGIN 93, Intermediate Microeconomics WIth Applications to Sustainability ENVECON 100 and International Trade ECON C181.
As the director of the Sugar-Energy sector of student-interest group Agrolbmec São Paulo at my home university, these classes helped me connect my economics studies with environmental topics. These courses were a perfect fit for my major, providing me with in-depth knowledge of energy and sustainability.
In my view, Berkeley classes are much more interactive and discussion-based than at IBMEC, which I really enjoyed. The constant exchange of ideas challenges you to question your previous knowledge and helps you develop strong argumentative skills.
I’ll be taking lessons learned at Berkeley as I envision my future. I’m currently doing a finance internship at Radar Investment Management (Cosan and Nuveen) in São Paulo.
In five to 10 years, I see myself working in a leadership position at a global company within the agribusiness or energy sector, driving innovative and sustainable solutions. My goal is to contribute to the development of projects that combine economic growth with environmental responsibility.
I also plan to pursue an M.B.A. to strengthen my skills and expand my international network.
Sightseeing!
Outside of the classroom, I had many unforgettable experiences. One of the highlights was a road trip from Berkeley to Carmel along the Pacific Coast Highway, which had the most beautiful views I’ve ever seen.
Additionally, visiting iconic spots like the Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, Chase Center, Pier 39 and Alcatraz Island were must-see experiences.
I’m a big sports fan, so I believe everyone should go to a Golden Bears football game in Berkeley and watch a Warriors basketball game in San Francisco. Besides those, visiting Fourth Street and the Campanile also are great spots to put on your list.
My advice to anyone starting BGA is to embrace every opportunity to connect with people from diverse backgrounds—networking is one of the most valuable aspects of the program.
Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself by taking courses outside of your comfort zone; Berkeley offers a unique chance to explore different areas of knowledge.
Also, manage your time well to balance academic life and the incredible experiences the Bay Area has to offer.
