Graduate Sandeep Khandelwal advances his software engineering career

After more than 20 years working in software engineering, enterprise systems and cloud technologies, many professionals might feel like they have already learned everything they need to know. For Sandeep Khandelwal, however, continuous learning has always been part of the job.

Today, Sandeep works at Atlassian, where he optimizes continuous integration and continuous delivery/deployment (CI/CD) and DevOps processes, improves operational efficiency and supports customers using cloud-based development tools. His expertise spans Bitbucket Pipelines, Python, Docker, AWS and Terraform, and he collaborates closely with product management, engineering and site reliability teams to improve software delivery and customer experiences.

Yet even with decades of experience, Sandeep saw an opportunity to strengthen his foundation and position himself for continued growth. That desire led him to our software development certificate.

“At that point in my career,” Sandeep explains, “I wanted to strengthen my formal software engineering foundation and gain deeper exposure to scalable application architecture, software design and modern development methodologies. I was already working in enterprise technology environments, but I wanted to deepen my software engineering fundamentals and better understand how scalable systems are designed, built and maintained.

“What stood out to me,” he continues, “was that the curriculum went beyond traditional programming coursework and included modern engineering concepts such as software architecture, cloud computing, testing methodologies, scalable application development and DevOps-related practices.”

One of the greatest advantages of the program was that Sandeep could immediately apply what he learned to his day-to-day responsibilities. This included:

  • managing complex escalations
  • improving operational processes
  • supporting feature launches
  • collaborating cross-functionally with engineering and product teams
  • helping improve customer experience and platform reliability

Balancing work and study was demanding at times,” Sandeep adds, “but it also gave me the opportunity to immediately apply what I was learning to real production environments.”

That practical connection became one of the most valuable aspects of the program.

“The coursework strengthened how I approached reliability, maintainability and operational efficiency in CI/CD environments,” Sandeep enthuses.

“For example, the program reinforced systematic approaches to debugging, automation design and engineering workflows, which became highly valuable while working on CI/CD optimization initiatives, escalation reduction efforts and operational reliability improvements within large SaaS environments.”

What stood out to me was that the curriculum went beyond traditional programming coursework and included modern engineering concepts.

As a seasoned professional, Sandeep appreciated that the coursework was grounded in real-world engineering challenges.

“One of the things I appreciated most was how practical and industry-oriented the coursework was,” he says. “The instructors brought real-world engineering experience into the classroom, which made the material highly relevant and engaging.”

He also benefited from learning alongside professionals from a variety of backgrounds.

“The interaction with fellow students was also valuable because many came from different technical and professional backgrounds,” he adds. “That created strong discussions around architecture, software design, testing strategies and engineering problem solving.”

Those experiences reinforced principles that continue to shape Sandeep’s work today, “especially around maintainability, scalability, structured debugging and system reliability.”

Importantly, the certificate delivered more than technical knowledge. It also helped Sandeep expand his professional impact and take on broader engineering and leadership responsibilities.

“Personally,” Sandeep adds, “earning the certificate represents a commitment to continuous learning and professional growth. Technology evolves rapidly, and I believe strong engineers should continue investing in both technical depth and adaptability throughout their careers.

“The program also helped reinforce the confidence to contribute beyond day-to-day engineering work through technical writing, mentoring, peer-review activities, conference judging and broader participation in professional engineering communities.”

The Lasting Value of Engineering Fundamentals

Looking back on his certificate experience, the lessons that stay with Sandeep aren’t tied to a single technology or programming language.

“The biggest lasting skill has been structured engineering thinking: understanding how to design systems that are scalable, maintainable and reliable over the long term,” he describes.

He also credits the program with strengthening core practices that remain relevant regardless of industry changes.

“The program reinforced the importance of modular design, debugging discipline, testing practices and thinking beyond just implementation,” Sandeep says. “Those principles continue to influence how I approach cloud infrastructure, DevOps workflows, CI/CD systems and operational engineering today. An important takeaway was learning how technical decisions connect directly to reliability, efficiency and overall business impact.”

Looking back, Sandeep encourages students to focus less on completing assignments and more on mastering the underlying concepts.

“Technology changes constantly, but strong engineering fundamentals—problem solving, debugging, architecture, maintainability and systems thinking—remain valuable throughout an entire career,” he offers.

An important takeaway was learning how technical decisions connect directly to reliability, efficiency and overall business impact.

He also encourages students to extend their learning beyond the classroom. “Build projects, collaborate with peers, contribute to technical communities, write about what you learn and stay curious,” he enthuses. “Long-term growth in engineering often comes from combining technical skill with continuous learning and community involvement.”

As for the future, Sandeep plans to continue working at the intersection of software engineering, DevOps, cloud infrastructure and AI-assisted engineering systems.

“Long term, I want to help shape scalable and reliable engineering practices while continuing to support and mentor the next generation of engineers entering the field.”
