When Paola Mazzocchi moved from Italy to California in 2023, she wasn't just starting a new chapter geographically; she was reimagining her career. After spending more than a decade in the music industry, Paola wanted to build new technical skills that would help her break into one of today's fastest-growing fields.

"While I didn't consider myself a data professional at the time," Paola reflects, "I was constantly organizing information and working with the metadata of a music catalog of thousands of songs."

That decision led her to our Data Analysis certificate through which she gained the analytical foundation that helped launch her first U.S. role as a content analyst. Today, she's continuing to build a career in AI data and analytics.

I realized that data analysis combines many of the things I enjoy most: problem-solving, critical thinking and storytelling.

Building on an Unexpected Foundation

After relocating to California, Paola decided it was the perfect opportunity to invest in herself while waiting for her work permit.

"I wanted to strengthen my analytical skills and challenge myself to learn something completely new," she recalls. At the same time, she had watched data become increasingly influential within the music industry, helping companies decide "how to promote a release, where to schedule a tour or even when to release an album or a single," Paola explains.

This sparked a new career goal.

"I realized that data analysis combines many of the things I enjoy most: problem-solving, critical thinking and storytelling," Paola says.

But she wanted to learn more than just theory. Paola was looking for a program that would teach practical tools that employers expect—such as in SQL, databases, data visualization and analytical thinking—while giving her the flexibility to learn online.

"UC Berkeley Extension was the best fit for my goals because of the curriculum, flexibility and practical approach to learning," Paola adds. "The courses were fully online, which gave me the flexibility to learn at my own pace."

She especially appreciated the opportunity to apply what she was learning through independent projects, which she found "challenging and rewarding."

The program showed me that analytical skills can be learned with persistence, curiosity and practice.

Launching a Career in Data Analysis

After completing the certificate and receiving her work authorization, Paola quickly saw the return on her investment.

"I believe the certificate played an important role in helping me secure my first professional opportunities in the United States," she continues. "It provided me with a solid foundation in data analysis and it demonstrated to employers my commitment to learning new skills and adapting to a new professional environment."

The coursework continues to shape how she approaches her work each day.

"Learning data analysis has changed the way I approach problems by encouraging me to rely on evidence rather than assumptions," Paola describes.

While AI continues to reshape the data profession, Paola believes the future belongs to professionals who know how to combine technology with critical thinking.

"I believe that the ability to combine human judgment with AI tools will be a key skill for future success," she adds. "While AI can process large amounts of information efficiently, human expertise remains essential for handling ambiguity, understanding context and making nuanced decisions. I see AI as a powerful assistant that supports human decision-making rather than replacing it."

What excites me most is the opportunity to use data and technology to support creativity rather than replace it.

Advice for Career Changers

Having successfully transitioned from music publishing into data analysis, Paola hopes others won't let an unconventional background discourage them.

"Don't be intimidated if you are coming from a non-technical background," she says. "I transitioned from a career in music publishing, and the program showed me that analytical skills can be learned with persistence, curiosity and practice."

Looking ahead, she hopes to combine both chapters of her career.

"I would love to use these skills with my background in music publishing and the creative industries, helping organizations use data to better understand audiences, measure performance, identify opportunities and make more informed decisions," Paola envisions. "What excites me most is the opportunity to use data and technology to support creativity rather than replace it."
