When Mark Chappell reflects on his career path, one thing is clear: It hasn’t followed a straight line. From maintaining aircraft in the U.S. Air Force to co-founding a startup focused on satellite technology, his journey has been driven by curiosity, adaptability and, eventually, a need to communicate highly technical ideas with precision.

“I joined the Air Force as an aircraft maintainer for about 10 years,” he shares. “I was never really involved in aviation before that, but after being in the field, it grew on me.”

That early immersion sparked a deeper interest in aerospace, leading Mark to pursue a degree in space flight operations from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. But it was what came next—building a startup from the ground up—that exposed a critical gap in his skill set.

I needed to be able to technically understand what engineers and program managers were telling me, and translate that information onto a piece of paper that would be sent to the customer.

Learning to Write in the Real World

It was during his work at the startup that Mark took a leap into the unknown, and one that required him to quickly develop new skills.

“That’s where I had my first foray into technical writing outside of college,” he shares. “I was writing government grants and things of that nature. My writing wasn’t strong then, but I did my best.”

The experience was invaluable but also exhausting. After two-and-a-half years of long weeks and intense demands, Mark decided it was time for a change.

That change came in the form of a role at Scaled Composites, a pioneering aerospace company with a legacy of innovation. For Mark, it was a dream opportunity.

“I had first learned about the company literally in textbooks and college classes,” he says. “So, I thought, ‘Wow, this is an amazing opportunity.’”

But stepping into a business development role—specifically as a bids and proposals specialist—revealed a new challenge.

“I quickly saw a need to improve my writing skills,” he reflects. “I needed to be able to technically understand what engineers and program managers were telling me, and translate that information onto a piece of paper that would be sent to the customer.”

Determined to advance, Mark sought continuing education and after researching options, one name stood out.

UC Berkeley Extension came up,” Mark adds. “I’m aware of Berkeley’s reputation, so I thought the technical communication certificate would be an awesome opportunity.“

From one course to completing the full curriculum, Mark met his primary goal: to gain “practical, immediately applicable skills that I could translate to my job.”

When doing a homework assignment, the next day I was literally applying what I learned to my job.

Delivering on the Job

What surprised Mark most wasn’t just the quality of the coursework; it was how quickly he could apply what he learned.

“I was seeing this play out on a weekly basis,” Mark reveals. “When doing a homework assignment, the next day I was literally applying what I learned to my job.”

That real-time application became one of the most valuable aspects of the certificate. As the curriculum covers everything including document design and structure, these newfound skills for Mark proved essential in his day-to-day work.

As the program progressed, Mark found himself gaining confidence and clarity.

“I really enjoyed learning how to format text in order to catch people’s attention,” Mark describes. “I liked using little psychological tricks to keep their attention on the information where you want it to be.”

One of the most transformative takeaways wasn’t just about writing; it was about thinking.

“What I still apply today is having this hierarchical view of a document and being able to break everything down into smaller chunks,” Mark describes. “It allows me to break down a larger piece of information and then ask a specific person who can help me with completing those lower-level tasks.”

Working in an industry where proposals can determine multimillion-dollar decisions, that clarity is critical.

I love having the Berkeley name attached to my LinkedIn. That’s awesome.

Writing at the Highest Stakes

Today, as a bids and proposals manager, Mark plays a key role in shaping how major aerospace projects are communicated.

“The proposals I’m writing start from literally a blank sheet of paper about an aerospace technology to now we’re flying it!” he enthuses.

His work involves more than just describing technical processes. It requires articulating risks, opportunities, timelines and execution strategies in a way that resonates with high-level stakeholders.

“You have to explain your approach and also communicate the risks and our plan to mitigate them,” he says.

It’s a high-pressure environment, but one that he finds deeply rewarding. “Being able to clearly articulate that important information is exciting to me.”

Beyond skill-building, the experience left Mark with something more intangible but equally valuable. “I love having the Berkeley name attached to my LinkedIn,” he says. “That’s awesome.”

But it’s not just the name; it’s the quality behind it. “I’ve learned more from those four classes than I did in a whole lot of other classes I’ve taken.”

As for his future, Mark is focused on continuing to grow within the aerospace industry that he’s come to love. “I’m hoping to keep advancing my career by taking on increasingly impactful leadership positions,” he says.

It’s a journey that started with hands-on mechanical work and evolved into high-level strategic communication—proof that the ability to clearly convey complex ideas can be just as powerful as building them.

“I’m really happy with what I do,” Mark says. “Just moving up and onwards.”
