Hi! I’m Jeongseo Kim, and I was part of the Berkeley Global Access Program (BGA) Spring 2023 cohort. I’m currently studying at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (South Korea), majoring in life science and double-minoring in psychology and biomedical science and engineering. I’m now in my final semester and approaching early graduation.
I had previously participated in the UC Berkeley Summer Sessions in 2022 and had such a great experience that I wanted to return. I was particularly drawn to Berkeley’s exceptional research environment and the opportunity to engage in meaningful research. The lectures by world-renowned professors also appealed to me, and Berkeley’s location in California—with its proximity to many beautiful travel destinations—made it an ideal place to return to.
My Course Load
During my semester, I took Molecular Immunology, Stem Cell Biology, Bacterial Pathogenesis and plant biology.
Molecular Immunology: I have always been deeply interested in immunology, but due to various circumstances wasn't able to take immunology courses at my home university. This was one of the main reasons I applied to BGA: I wanted to study immunology and neuroscience and potentially participate in research. Taking this course at Berkeley allowed me to pursue this interest, and the course provided a strong foundation that I hope to build upon in future research.
Stem Cell Biology, Ethics and Societal Impact: This course sparked my fascination with stem cells, and I found myself captivated by their potential for regenerative medicine. This newfound passion led me to engage in stem cell research after completing the course.
Bacterial Pathogenesis: This class enhanced my knowledge of infectious diseases, complimenting my work in biomedical research.
The (Secret) Life of Plants: In this class, I had the opportunity to study an entirely different but equally important life form: plants. While my primary focus had been on human biology, this course expanded my perspective and allowed me to appreciate the biological processes of another crucial organism.
These courses not only complimented my major in life sciences, but also broadened my academic and research horizons.
One key difference between classes at Berkeley and my home university was the interactive and discussion-based approach that Berkeley professors encourage. At Berkeley, students were often expected to actively participate in discussions, ask questions and engage critically with the material, which fostered a more dynamic and open learning environment.
The other aspect I especially appreciated was the wide range of courses available. Berkeley has so many exceptional professors that even within a specific subject—such as immunology—multiple courses are offered, each providing different insights and perspectives. This variety allowed me to explore the subject in more depth.
Moments Outside of the Classroom
A memorable aspect of my time at Berkeley was being selected as a Berkeley Global Ambassador. In this role, I had the opportunity to share my experiences and promote Berkeley’s excellence and vibrant culture. It was fulfilling to highlight the incredible opportunities and experiences that Berkeley offers to students from around the world.
Living at the International House (I-House) was an incredible experience, too! I met people from all over the world, learned about different cultures and cuisines and made lifelong friends. The cultural exchange, late-night talks and road trips together created memories that will stay with me for life. I-House wasn’t just a place to live; it was a melting pot of diverse ideas and perspectives.
I also had the chance to join a STEM-focused club, Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association, where I connected with students who shared the same passion for science and technology. Being part of this community deepened my academic engagement and gave me a sense of belonging.
Berkeley offers countless networking and learning opportunities beyond the classroom. I attended numerous seminars and workshops, and connected with professionals from Silicon Valley startups, major tech companies like Google and renowned researchers from nearby universities. I even had the chance to visit Google’s headquarters and attend special events, which broadened my perspective and helped me gain valuable insights into different fields.
Taking Time to Travel
While research and academics were my top priorities while at Berkeley, I also explored the stunning landscapes of California and beyond. I traveled with friends to Yosemite, Big Sur, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Hawaii, Canada and Mexico, creating unforgettable memories.
A road trip through Yosemite, where we camped under the stars and experienced the breathtaking scenery, was particularly memorable. These moments allowed me to balance intense academic work with much-needed relaxation and connection to nature.
Exclusive Opportunity: Career Development and Coaching Seminar
This was an incredibly valuable experience. The course provided comprehensive guidance on various aspects of career and graduate school planning. I learned how to craft a compelling résumé, CV and statement of purpose, which was especially helpful as I was preparing for my future academic pursuits.
Additionally, the seminar offered practical advice on building a strong LinkedIn profile and tips on how to present myself effectively during interviews. Having the opportunity to receive personalized feedback and engage with experienced career coaches was invaluable in helping me refine my professional approach.
