Hello! I'm Wanying Luo, recently immersed in the vibrant atmosphere of the University of California, Berkeley. As a participant in the Berkeley Global Access (BGA) Program, my academic journey has been both enriching and transformative.

My initial interaction with Berkeley was through online courses in computer science and data science. These courses were meticulously structured, providing a solid foundation through systematic knowledge modules. Transitioning to in-person classes, I found myself in the historic Wheeler Hall, where the tangible connection to Berkeley's legacy became palpable.

A highlight of my experience has been the Career Development and Coaching course led by Jennifer Davis(link is external). Her insights into résumé crafting, mock interviews and optimizing LinkedIn profiles have been invaluable, providing clear guidance for navigating the professional world.

Balancing Academics and Personal Growth

Berkeley has taught me the art of balance. Regular visits to the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF) were a cornerstone of my routine, especially swimming sessions that offer both physical rejuvenation and mental clarity.

Evenings often found me in the Morrison Hall practice rooms, where playing the piano provided a creative outlet amidst rigorous academic pursuits.

Engaging discussions at the Free Speech Movement Café and collaborative projects at the C.V. Starr East Asian Library further enriched my experience, fostering a community of intellectual curiosity and cultural exchange.

Exploring Beyond the Classroom

Weekends were opportunities to explore the broader San Francisco Bay Area. From the iconic Golden Gate Bridge(link is external) to the artistic allure of Los Angeles' Getty Center(link is external), each trip broadened my horizons.

Traveling to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park(link is external) offered a first-hand look at nature's raw power, while a visit to New York's Museum of Modern Art(link is external) (MoMA) challenged and expanded my perspectives on contemporary art.

Tips for Future BGA Participants

  • Utilize RSF's diverse facilities, including the climbing wall and equipment rental services.
  • Attend club recruitment events at Sproul Plaza to explore new interests and meet like-minded peers.
  • Schedule one-on-one sessions with the Career Center for personalized guidance and potential networking opportunities.
  • Embrace every travel opportunity as a learning experience; sometimes, conversations with locals offer insights beyond textbooks.

Standing atop the Campanile, gazing over the Bay Area, I reflect on myriad experiences Berkeley offered. It's not just about academic growth, but also about personal transformation, cultural immersion and the courage to explore uncharted territories.
